Winter Color

Winter. Brrr. Just saying the word makes me shiver. But alas, winter is coming! Here's a quick update on what's on trend for hair color this chilly season.

One of the big trends this winter season is going richer and deeper with color. Because skin tones are a little lighter, adding more depth to hair color can help you feel like you're not pale and sickly.

We achieve this type of coloring with the use of foiling or hand-painting sections of the hair with highlights and lowlights to perfectly blend and add tone and depth.

One thing to note is that you can still be blonde and add depth in the form of lowlights that our highly trained stylists will artfully place in your hair.

Here's a couple of examples of adding depth to your color, but still keeping it natural and easy-to-maintain.

Another trend this winter is to try a bold color. We usually use our demi-permanent line for this, which conditions the hair while adding lots of shine and depth, but is less commitment for someone who wants to try something new, but wants the ability to go back to their original color with more ease.

Here's a few examples.

Whatever your coloring needs are, Echo Salon stylists are trained and ready to help you through a hair color update this season.

We always start each color appointment off with a full consultation. We also offer free color consultations if you're nervous about scheduling for your color. Please visit our services tab in our website to learn more about pricing, or call us 616.742.9980 for more information.

We hope this winter is full of coziness, family time, great hair, and good vibes.

xo, Melissa

New Seasons

Echo Salon is a pillar of the Grand Rapids Heartside Business District. In our 18 year history, we have gone through a few changes- mostly for the better. Changes can be challenging, but with the right attitude and attention to detail, we believe they can be good. So today, we are announcing that after eight years of ownership and working full-time as a hairstylist, Brandi Rinehart decided to hand over the reigns of ownership to Melissa Looman.

Melissa is a 2011 graduate of Douglas J Aveda Institute of Cosmetology in Grand Rapids and has six years of professional experience as a hair stylist. She envisions Echo Salon to be a warm environment where guests feel comfortable and cared for. She will style hair about three days a week while devoting a few other days to leadership work behind the scenes.

Brandi will remain as one of Echo Salon's valued stylists. Echo is home to Brandi and many of her clients and she plans on remaining here for many years to come.

Echo is located at 24 Sheldon Blvd. SE in downtown Grand Rapids- Across Fulton Street from the Children’s Museum and on the first block of Sheldon Blvd. We are on the first floor of The Lofts Apartments and have great street-facing windows and tall, exposed ceilings. Metered street parking is readily available.

Currently we carry a wide array of products including Wella hair color and products, Pureology, Sexy Hair, MorrocanOil, Sebastian, Label M, and a few more. There’s definitely something for everyone.

The services we offer are hair cuts, color, styles, and blowouts, hair extensions (micro-cylinder, tape-in, and halo), full body sugaring, makeup, and shellac nails.

A note from Melissa:

Hello! Echo Salon has captured my heart with it's wonderful team and guests, warm and friendly atmosphere, and beautiful space in the heart of Downtown Grand Rapids. I love the city and the salon, and I will continue Echo Salon's rich traditions of brilliant customer service and beautiful hair.

Our vision is to enhance and inspire inner beauty with outer beauty.

Now, I'm sure you're wondering, "What are you changing?" Not many things will change very quickly. Brandi has done an amazing job with the whole vibe of Echo Salon, and I so appreciate her willingness to work with me throughout this entire transition. We hope to make everything as smooth and seamless as possible.

A few things you can expect us to be slowly but surely working on are a fresh new look for the salon (digitally and physically), and to fully staff the salon. The ability for about 10 stations are there, but not currently in use. There are currently 7 staff, so we are looking for qualified candidates. Feel free to email me if you have anyone to refer at The best thing for qualified applicants to do is to stop in with a resume, cover letter, and portfolio (digital or paper).

Thank you for your willingness to transition with us. I'd love to hear from you! Email me or comment on this blog and I will respond as soon as time allows.
